Another Core Memories Unlocked - Japan

Visiting Japan has been one of my bucket lists since college. My last visit to Japan was with a tour group and all they fed us was Chinese food, so that doesn't really count. This time, I get to experience a lot of what Japanese tourists usually do : visiting temples, eating authentic Japanese food, shopping at Konbini (convenience store), wearing Kimono, taking public transport etc. Thanks to my fiancĂ© for becoming a guide since day 1 cause I forget bring my part of brain that is responsible for a sense of direction. JK! Japan public transport could be quite confusing though! Ok enough with the opening statement, now let's move on to the meat.

These are my takeaways from my trip to Japan :

1. Japanese people simply don't have time to make friends. Culturally, they work like a horse, doing 40 hours OT without getting paid and going back to office after dinner. These are depressing stories that I heard if someone work in an old established Japanese company. Thus, many younger generations choose to work in a startup or MNC company as the work culture is more civilized.

2. Their convenience store is really convenient! I can get hard boiled eggs, onigiris, salad, hand rolls, cooked fish , ice creams , puddings, you name it, everything in a very easily teared off packaging that won't make your whole quick dining experience messy.

3. Kimono suffocates you, a lot. I did a photoshoot in a temple which ended up becoming my proposal photoshoot while wearing a kimono. I lost my appetite the whole day and ended up getting an acid reflux. It was so hard to breathe in and I have to sit on a taxi for one hour while constantly having to catch a breath. But, on the positive side, my photos came out amazing!

Love the color of the kimono and obi belt

4. Though Japan is popular for its Matcha, but not all Matcha place in Japan is good! I tried a Tiktok famous matcha latte in Tsukiji Market and I can proudly say my homemade matcha latte tastes even better than what they serve to thousands of people a day.

This cup of Matcha Latte costs 700 yen or around $5 which is quite expensive for Japan standard

5. Not all chained restaurants in Japan are good. Coco Curry Ichibanya and Ichiran are exceptionally good but Yoshinoya can barely even meet the standard.

Easily one of the best meals in Japan, so comforting.

Recommend spiciness level 1 or 2 to enjoy a little bit of spice.

6. You hardly see Japanese people walking in pairs. Most people that I see on the streets were walking or eating alone. As much as I love traveling to Japan, I can never imagine myself living here alone.

7. The depression level in Japan is quite high and they have the highest rate of suicides. My photographer told me that he once went into weeks of depression and police came by his house every 3 days to make sure that he didn't commit suicide. They never push him to come out of the house though, cause they know being nosy will just push them beyond their limits.

Well, that's all for today. Please bear with me cause I'll be posting a lot about Japan food and desserts! Enjoy your Tuesday, readers!
